How to Set Up Triple Monitors for Sim Racing

A triple monitor array is not three monitors side by side. It is one continuous field of view built from three angled projections, and getting that right depends on three things: mounting the panels so the side screens can angle inward, telling the sim the real physical geometry of your setup, and having enough graphics card to draw three times the pixels. Skip any one and the result looks worse than the single screen you started with.
What do you actually need to mount three monitors?
The mount is where most triple builds go wrong, because a standard desk stand cannot angle a panel. Each side screen has to rotate inward around its own vertical axis by tens of degrees, which means a mount with independent yaw on each arm. Check the per-arm weight rating against your specific panels before ordering, not against the category. Remove the factory stand before weighing, because the stand is often a third of the total.

This is structurally better in every way: the screens move with the seat, so the geometry you configure stays true, and there is no desk flex transmitting wheelbase vibration into the image. Safety. Three 27 inch panels plus a mount is commonly 45 to 60 pounds of mass sitting on one clamp point, cantilevered forward, at head height, directly in front of where you sit. Verify the desk clamp is on solid material rather than an unsupported overhang, torque the clamp fully, and load the centre panel first so the assembly is never carrying two side arms with nothing balancing them. Why must the side panels be angled inward?
A flat three-panel wall puts the outer edge of each side screen much further from your eyes than the centre. At a normal sim racing distance of roughly 24 inches, the far corner of a flat side panel can be over 40 inches away, so the same object occupies fewer degrees of vision there than it does in the centre. The image is geometrically wrong before any software gets involved.
Angling the sides inward wraps the array around your head so every part of every panel sits at a similar distance from your eyes. The target is simple: rotate each side panel inward by about the same number of degrees that one panel already covers from your seat. If one 27 inch panel at 24 inches fills about 52 degrees of your horizontal vision, angle the sides by about 50 degrees. Across the sizes and distances people actually use, that rule lands in a 45 to 60 degree window every time.
Two failure modes bracket the correct angle. Too shallow, near 30 degrees, and you have most of a flat wall: the outer edges pull away, the sim geometry stops matching, and cars appear to accelerate as they cross into the side screens. Too steep, past 65 degrees, and the outer edges crowd toward your shoulders, which compresses the mirrors and makes the whole array feel like a tunnel.
Set the angle with a protractor or a phone level app against the back of each panel rather than by eye, and make both sides match within a couple of degrees. Asymmetry is genuinely disorienting and it is the reason some people report feeling unwell on triples that are otherwise configured correctly.
What screen size and distance should you use?
Horizontal field of view in degrees is 2 x atan((screen width / 2) / viewing distance), converted from radians. Use screen width, never the diagonal, because a 27 inch 16:9 panel is only 23.5 inches wide. Two conclusions fall straight out of that table. Second, the distance matters more than the size. Moving 27 inch panels from 28 inches to 24 inches adds 20 degrees of total coverage for free.

Should you use Nvidia Surround, AMD Eyefinity, or the sim triple screen mode?
These are two different things that people treat as alternatives to each other, and the distinction is the single most important software point on this page.
Nvidia Surround and AMD Eyefinity are display-level features. They tell Windows that three physical panels are one very wide virtual display, for example 7680 x 1440 for three 1440p screens. Everything the computer draws is then drawn as one flat image spread across that width. This is what older titles and menus need in order to fill all three screens at all.
The sim triple screen mode is a rendering feature. It renders three separate camera projections, one per panel, each rotated to match the physical angle you configured. Because it knows your panels are angled, the geometry is correct: a straight wall stays straight across the seams and a car crossing a bezel keeps a constant apparent speed.
A single stretched flat image on angled panels is always wrong, and the wrongness scales with the angle. At 20 degrees of toe-in it is a mild horizontal stretch at the edges. At 50 degrees, which is where you actually want the panels, it is severe: the road bends outward, the horizon kinks at each seam and objects seem to speed up as they enter the side screens.
So the rule is: if the sim has a triple screen mode, enable it and enter the real numbers. iRacing, Assetto Corsa Competizione, Automobilista 2, rFactor 2, Le Mans Ultimate and Richard Burns Rally with its community plugin all have one. Use Surround or Eyefinity only when the title has no triple mode, or when you want desktop and menus to span all three screens.
What numbers does the sim triple screen mode need?
All triple screen configurations want the same three physical measurements, so measure once and keep them written down. Every one is a measurement, not a preference.
- Screen width. The visible glass width of one panel, not the diagonal and not the outer chassis. For a 27 inch 16:9 panel this is about 23.5 inches, or 597 mm.
- Bezel width. The plastic on one side of one panel. Some sims ask for one bezel, some ask for the combined pair at a seam. Read the label carefully, because entering the wrong one doubles or halves your correction.
- Viewing distance. From the bridge of your nose to the centre of the centre panel, sitting in the driving position with your back against the seat. Measure it after the seat is set, not before.
Enter those, and then leave the in-game FOV slider alone. This is the step people skip. Once the sim knows your real screen width and real distance, the correct FOV is arithmetic, not taste, and the sim will compute it. A correctly computed FOV almost always feels too narrow at first, because most people have spent years driving with an artificially wide view that makes the car feel fast. Give it a week. Judging braking points and apexes gets measurably easier once the world is rendered at the same angular scale your eyes would see it.
Configure bezel correction at the same time. Hold a straight edge across two panels at the seam and adjust the correction value until the line stays straight through the gap. Without it, the world hidden behind the plastic is never removed, so cars jump forward across each seam. With it, a car slides behind the bezel and reappears the correct distance along, which is what your brain expects from looking through a real A-pillar.
How much graphics card do triples actually need?
Pixel count is the honest way to size this. One 1440p panel is 2560 x 1440, which is 3.69 megapixels. Three of them is 11.06 megapixels, three times the load, every frame. Three 1080p panels is 6.22 megapixels, and three 4K panels is 24.88 megapixels, which is beyond what most consumer graphics cards will hold at a race-usable frame rate in a full grid.
For comparison, a 34 inch ultrawide at 3440 x 1440 is 4.95 megapixels and a 49 inch super ultrawide such as the Samsung Odyssey G9 at $899.99 at 5120 x 1440 is 7.37. Frame rate matters more in sim racing than raw fidelity, because your inputs are timed against what you see. A dropped frame during a braking zone is a lost reference point. If triples put you below a locked frame rate, cut shadow resolution, reflection quality, crowd and track detail, and opponent car detail before you touch resolution or refresh. Those settings cost the most and change the racing least.
Also plan the outputs. Three panels means three cables, and mixed HDMI and DisplayPort connections behave inconsistently under Surround and Eyefinity. Use the same connection type on all three where the card allows it. What goes wrong most often?
Setting the seat after the screens. The geometry you configure is only valid for the distance you measured, so moving the seat invalidates all of it. Set the seating position first, then mount and configure the screens around it.
Mismatched panels. Three different models will differ in colour temperature, in gamma and in input lag, and the seams become obvious. If you are building triples one panel at a time, buy the same model each time even if a newer one is cheaper, and check the panel is still the same revision.
Forgetting the vertical alignment. The three panels have to sit at the same height, with the same tilt, or the horizon steps at each seam. On an arm mount this is a five minute job with a spirit level and it is the difference between an array that disappears and one you keep noticing.
Buying a single 27 inch panel as a placeholder in a model that is later discontinued. If triples are the plan, buy the centre panel from a line you can still buy twice more in a year.
