Build your sim racing rig the right way
Most sim racing advice starts with the wheel. It should start with the room. Work out the footprint, the field of view and the torque your mount can actually hold, then buy once instead of three times.

Three numbers decide your rig
Footprint
A fixed cockpit needs roughly 55 to 70 inches front to back. A folding rig stores in under 10. Measure before you shop.
Field of view
FOV comes from screen width and viewing distance, not diagonal. The correct number almost always feels too narrow at first, and running it too wide ruins braking points.
Torque you can mount
Past roughly 8 Nm a desk clamp gives up. Torque the frame cannot hold is torque you cannot use, which is why the rig outranks the base.

What this site is
SimRacingCave exists because sim racing has an expensive failure mode: buying the parts in the wrong order. A direct drive base bolted to a folding stand will move the stand. A 49 inch super ultrawide on a mid-range graphics card will drop frames at exactly the moment a full grid funnels into turn one. A cockpit that does not fold will get resented by everyone else in the house within a month.
So the tools come first. The rig space calculator tells you whether the frame fits your room before you pay for it. The triple monitor FOV calculator gives you the field of view number that matches the screens you actually own. The wheelbase torque calculator tells you whether your mounting can hold what you are about to buy.
The gear guides follow the same logic. Real prices, real specifications, three tiers, and an explicit statement of who should not buy the expensive one. We research published manufacturer specifications and verified owner reviews. We do not test gear in person and we never claim to. Where a product is not sold on Amazon, we say so and link a search rather than inventing a listing.

How much does a sim racing setup cost?

The gap between the first two is where most of the useful improvement lives. Moving from a gear driven wheel to direct drive, from a travel brake to a pressure brake, and from a borrowed chair to a bolted frame are three category changes that happen together for a reason: each one produces forces the next one has to absorb. The gap between the second and third builds buys headroom and adjustability rather than capability, which is why the expert page states plainly who should not buy it.

The four decisions that decide a rig
The frame. It sets your torque ceiling, your braking consistency and your footprint, and it is the only component that makes everything bolted to it behave better. A desk clamp reacts about 5 Nm, a wheel stand about 8, a steel cockpit about 12 and aluminium profile about 25. Start at wheel stand versus full cockpit.
The brake. A potentiometer measures travel and a load cell measures force, and a real brake is a pressure device. This is the change most closely tied to lap time consistency and it costs less than a wheelbase upgrade. See the pedals roundup.
The display. Field of view is set by screen width divided by viewing distance, not by the diagonal on the box. Triple 1440p renders 11.06 megapixels per frame against 3.69 for one panel, so the graphics card is part of the display budget. The monitor size and FOV chart has every combination.
The platform. Console licensing is enforced in hardware, so choosing a platform is choosing a hardware catalogue. A Logitech G920 will not authenticate on a PS5 and a G29 will not authenticate on an Xbox, despite being the same wheel. The wheel compatibility chart lists every model against every platform.
