Sim racing budgets fail in a predictable way. Somebody prices a wheel, calls that the cost of the hobby, and then discovers that the pedals in the box are the weak link, that the desk flexes, and that one 24 inch monitor at arm's length is not the view they imagined. The honest number is the total of six categories: wheel, pedals, frame, screens, controls and the PC that has to drive it. This calculator prices all six at once and tells you which one is eating your money, because on most builds the answer surprises people. It is usually the screens.

What does a sim racing setup actually cost?
There are four honest price bands, and the jump between each one buys a specific capability rather than a general improvement. Knowing which capability you are buying is what stops a budget drifting upward by 200 dollars at a time.
Around 200 dollars buys a complete gear driven wheel and pedal bundle. The Logitech G920 Racing Wheel and Pedals at $199.99 is the standard answer here, and its PlayStation twin the Logitech G29 is mechanically the same wheel. You get force feedback, 900 degrees of rotation and three pedals. Clamped to a solid desk this is a real simulator, and it is the cheapest configuration that teaches you anything transferable.
Around 850 dollars is where a build stops fighting you. That is typically a hybrid or belt wheel such as the Thrustmaster T248 X Force Feedback Racing Wheel at $239.99, a load cell brake pedal set at $159.99, a folding cockpit at $253.26 so the pedals stop sliding, and a 27 inch 1440p panel at $209.00 close to your face. Every one of those four fixes a specific failure of the 200 dollar setup.
Between 1,800 and 2,600 dollars is the direct drive tier: a base with no gear train, a rigid frame that can hold it, and either triple panels or a headset. Above 3,000 dollars you are buying refinement. More torque than you will run, an aluminium profile frame, a 100 kg load cell brake at $379.99, tactile transducers. Where does the money actually go?
Researched marketplace prices for a representative product in each category, at three build levels. The percentages are of the hardware total and exclude any PC upgrade, because that cost depends entirely on what you already own.

The pattern that matters is in the last two rows of the direct drive column. The wheelbase is 650 dollars and the frame plus screens is 1,310. Once you leave the entry tier, the wheel stops being the expensive part. What should you spend money on first?
Pedals before wheel, almost always
A bundled potentiometer pedal set measures how far the pedal has moved. A load cell measures how hard you are pressing. Real brakes are pressure devices, so your leg already knows how to modulate one, and switching to a load cell brake transfers straight into consistent braking without relearning anything. Frame before torque
A desk clamp holds about 5 newton metres before it starts creaking and walking. A folding cockpit flexes visibly around 12. Buying a base your frame cannot hold means running it turned down, which means paying for torque you never use. If the plan involves direct drive, price the steel cockpit in the same order as the base, or accept an entry base and a wheel stand at $179.00 for now. Screens before almost anything else, if you are on a small monitor
Field of view is set by screen width and viewing distance, nothing else. If you are driving on a 24 inch panel three feet away, no amount of wheel spending will fix the fact that you cannot judge distance. Moving that same panel 10 inches closer is free. What costs do people leave out of the budget?
- A monitor mount, 60 to 200 dollars. Triples need the side panels angled inward, and no desk stand does that. A triple monitor mount at $66.48 is not optional equipment, it is part of the screen cost.
- A powered USB hub, around 25 dollars. A base, pedals, shifter, handbrake and button box is five ports, and unpowered hubs brown out when the base draws current. The powered 7 port hub at $23.47 is the boring fix.
- A floor mat, around 90 dollars. A rig on carpet settles unevenly and starts to rock. A rigid floor mat spreads the load and stops a hard floor being marked.
- A rim, on base-only purchases. A mid direct drive base at 650 dollars often ships without a steering wheel. Add 150 to 400 dollars, or buy a bundle instead.
- The games. A sim plus two or three car and track packs is easily 100 dollars, and a subscription-based online service is an ongoing cost rather than a purchase.
- Electricity and heat. Minor, but a high end graphics card driving triples in a small room is a space heater. It is a real reason people move a rig out of a bedroom.
What goes wrong with a sim racing budget?
Buying the wheel three times. The most expensive route into this hobby is a 200 dollar gear wheel, then a 400 dollar belt wheel eight months later, then a direct drive base after that. If you already know you will stay, and you are on PC, the entry direct drive bundle at 380 dollars costs less than the first two steps combined. If you do not know yet, buy the cheap one deliberately and treat it as a trial, not as step one of a ladder.
Spending the screen budget on the wheel. A 650 dollar base feeding a 24 inch panel at arm's length is a worse driving experience than a 240 dollar wheel feeding triples. Feedback tells you what the car is doing now. Vision tells you what it is about to do.
Underestimating the frame. The frame is 29 percent of a mid build and 32 percent of a direct drive build, and it is the part nobody photographs. It is also the part that decides whether the pedals stay where you put them, which decides whether your braking is repeatable.
Forgetting that VR replaces the screen budget, not adds to it. A Meta Quest 3S 128 GB VR Headset at $349.99 costs less than triple panels plus a mount, and it needs no wall space. It also costs more in graphics card, because two eyes plus distortion overhead is a heavier pixel load than one panel. Adding the shifter and handbrake to every build. An H-pattern shifter at $79.99 and a progressive handbrake at $99.99 are 180 dollars that matter enormously for rally and vintage GT and do almost nothing for modern GT3 racing, where the car has paddles and no handbrake. Buy them for the cars you actually drive.
