Disclaimer

Everything on SimRacingCave.com is researched guidance, not professional installation, engineering or medical advice.

General

The information on this site is provided for general informational purposes only. It is offered in good faith and researched from published manufacturer specifications, product listings and verified owner reviews, but we make no representation or warranty of any kind, express or implied, regarding its accuracy, adequacy, validity, reliability or completeness.

We do not test gear in person and we never claim to. Specifications change between hardware revisions and prices change constantly. Always confirm current specifications and pricing with the manufacturer or retailer before you buy.

Safety: direct drive wheelbases

A direct drive wheelbase produces enough torque to sprain a wrist, a thumb or a forearm, and a base above roughly 12 Nm can do so easily. Set the software torque limit before the first power-up, never put your thumbs through the spokes of a rim, keep the emergency stop within reach on bases that have one, and stand clear during a calibration sweep when the wheel turns to full lock on its own. Keep children and pets away from a powered base.

Safety: mounting, frames and pedals

Rig frames, seats and monitor stands carry real weight, and a frame or clamp that fails under load can cause injury and property damage. Follow the manufacturer's bolt pattern, fastener specification and torque figures rather than improvising. A load cell brake can be pushed with 25 to 45 kg of force by a normal driver, which is enough to drag a light rig across a floor or pull a clamp off a desk. Bolt down anything that has to react that force. Wall mounting a screen and any electrical work should be done by a qualified person.

Calculators and derived figures

The calculators on this site produce estimates from the numbers you enter, using the formulas stated on each page so you can check them. They are planning tools. They do not account for your specific room, your specific frame, floor construction, wall construction, fastener condition or the manufacturer's own limits, all of which override anything a calculator here says.

Health and comfort

Sim racing involves long periods in a fixed seated position with repeated loading of the arms, shoulders and right leg. Discomfort, strain and repetitive stress injuries are possible. Virtual reality use can cause motion sickness, eye strain and disorientation. Nothing on this site is medical advice. If you experience pain, numbness, persistent nausea or dizziness, stop and consult a qualified medical professional.
