The Order to Buy a Sim Racing Rig In (And Why)

Almost every sim racing rig is assembled in the wrong sequence, and the wrong sequence costs real money because it means buying the same category twice. The order this site argues for is frame, then pedals, then wheelbase, then screens, and it is not a matter of taste. It falls out of one physical fact: every part of a sim rig except the screen is a force device, and a force device is only as good as the structure it pushes against.
What is purchase zero, and why is it not on the list?

Why does the frame come before anything that plugs in?
Force feedback is a reaction force. The motor in a wheelbase applies torque to the rim, and by Newton's third law it applies exactly the same torque in the opposite direction to whatever the base is bolted to. If that structure moves, the torque goes into moving it rather than into your hands. This is not a subtle effect. Why do the pedals come before the wheelbase?
Because braking is where lap time is created and destroyed, and because the brake is the only input in the car where your body already has the correct instinct and the hardware is throwing it away.

The wheelbase comes third because it is the component whose benefit is most dependent on the two before it. Buy it first and a large part of what you paid for is dissipated into a moving desk and wasted on a braking input you cannot repeat. Buy it third and every newton metre lands.
Once the frame and pedals are sorted, this is the upgrade that changes the texture of driving completely. Direct drive removes the belt and gear train between the motor and your hands, so kerb edges, the moment the front tyres start to slide, and the difference between wheelspin and a genuine slide all arrive intact rather than smeared. What actually happens if you buy it out of order?
Base before frame. The most common expensive mistake. A 9 Nm base on a desk clamp does three things: it flexes the desk, it transmits vibration into your keyboard, screen and coffee, and it forces the clamp screw loose over a session so the base ends up slightly rotated. You then buy the frame anyway, so the money was not saved, it was delayed while producing a worse experience.
Base before pedals. The most common invisible mistake, because the rig feels better immediately and the lap times do not move. Detail through the wheel improves your ability to catch a slide. It does not improve your ability to arrive at the corner at the same speed twice, and that is where the time is.
Screens before pedals. Triples are the most visible upgrade in the hobby and the one most likely to be bought early for that reason. Ignore it if you race a single discipline that changes the weighting. Rally drivers get more from a stand plus a handbrake than from load cell pedals, because rally braking is less about repeatable peak pressure and more about left foot balance and handbrake timing.
Do not buy the MOZA R21 at 21 Nm at $947.16 as step three. Twenty one newton metres into a $253.26 folding cockpit is a genuinely bad idea: the frame is not rated for it, the rig will move, and you will have spent nearly a thousand dollars to make the frame the problem.
